In this blog I talk about my recent experience in trying to sculpt in stone and wood.
Recently I've been learning how to sculpt in wood and stone. Here is my experience and what I have learned about these 2 amazing mediums and what are my experiences: stone and wood. I thought I updated my clients on what I've been up to recently.
The Timeless Craft of Stone Sculpting
Stone sculpting is an ancient art form that dates back thousands of years, with early examples found in ancient times. Throughout history, different civilizations have used stone to create lasting monuments, statues, and intricate carvings, each contributing to the evolution of this craft.
From the colossal statues of Ancient Egypt to the detailed marble works of the Renaissance, stone sculpting has been a medium of expression, storytelling, and worship.
Recently, I had my first experience with stone sculpting, working with limestone, a material favored for its softness and ease of carving compared to harder stones like granite or marble.
This hands-on introduction gave me a deeper appreciation for the skill and patience required to transform a raw piece of stone into something meaningful.
Engaging in this timeless craft allowed me to connect with the long lineage of artists who have shaped stone throughout history.
The Ancient Art of Wood Carving
Wood carving is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression, with roots that stretch back to prehistoric times. Cultures across the globe have used wood to create functional objects, religious icons, and decorative pieces, often imbuing their carvings with symbolic meanings.
From the intricate designs of traditional African masks to the delicate reliefs of medieval European churches, wood carving has served as a medium for both art and storytelling.
Yesterday, I embarked on my first wood carving experience. Working with the wood outdoors was not just a creative endeavour, but a deeply personal and relaxing one. The natural environment seemed to enhance the connection between the material and the craft, making each cut and curve feel more intuitive and meaningful. This initial experience allowed me to appreciate the organic beauty of wood and the centuries-old tradition of transforming it into art.
The Experience of Wood and Stone
It was amazing to have experienced artists teach me more about how to use wood and stone to create artworks. I think I really like the two materials. I'll definitely be utilising them whenever I can get my hands on them and integrating them into my sculptures. They are readily available and they create really organic experiences for the audience and for me as the artist. They are excellent mediums for my abstract inspirations. I look forward to using these two mediums in my artwork whenever I get some.
